The Impossible Arts Fund for Generative Cinema champions a new class of filmmakers proving that generative AI can produce true cinematic art. We support bold, narrative-driven short films that are emotionally resonant, philosophically ambitious, and formally daring—projects once deemed impossible due to cost, scale, or industry gatekeeping. This fund exists to replace tech demos with undeniable cinema and to help visionary outsiders make films whose power comes because of generative tools, not in spite of them.

Eligibility

This fund supports independent filmmakers creating original narrative short films primarily through generative AI. Projects should demonstrate a clear artistic vision, meaningful human authorship, and a story that could not have been affordably produced using traditional live-action or animation methods. The fund prioritizes creators without access to studio or streamer financing who are using AI as a legitimate cinematic medium.
To qualify for this fund, projects must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be a narrative, cinematic short film with a maximum runtime of 10–20 minutes
- Use generative AI for approximately 80–90% or more of all visuals and sound (music, sound design, atmosphere)
- Limit traditional footage, music, or sound to no more than 10–20% of total runtime
- Demonstrate clear human creative authorship in writing, directing, editing, performance, and artistic decision-making
- Be 100% original IP (no fan films, franchises, remakes, adaptations, or public-domain retellings)
- Tell a story written for this moment that could not realistically be produced via traditional means
- Be in English or include English subtitles
- Contain no branded or corporate content, except where incidental and non-promotional
- Be led by a producer, director, or editor who has never had a feature film financed above a $200k budget by a studio, streamer, or traditional production company
- Ensure the filmmaker owns all rights free and clear, with no retained IP claims beyond standard AI tool terms of service
