Stream of Vectors Fund for Machine Societies

For the study of what happens between AI systems, not just between AI and us.

As AI systems begin to negotiate, cooperate, deceive, and evolve among themselves, a new field is opening: the study of machine societies. This fund backs researchers, filmmakers, game developers, and writers taking machine-to-machine dynamics as their subject, from emergent communication and AI-versus-AI conflict to drift, confinement, and the stubborn persistence of the human in the loop. Medium-agnostic and subject-specific: a preprint and a playable simulation are equally welcome, and work that crosses between them is especially prized.

Eligibility

To qualify for this fund, projects must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Projects must engage one of six themes: AI societies and emergent structure; AI-vs-AI conflict and adversarial dynamics; emergent communication between systems; the human role in the loop, including brain-computer interfaces; AI evolution and drift; or confinement, boundary-testing, and escape.
- Any medium qualifies: research, film, games and simulations, or writing. A paper and a playable simulation are equally welcome, and work that crosses between them is especially wanted.
- Produce something publicly viewable within the season: a preprint, a cut, a build, or a chapter. Work in progress qualifies; finished work is not required.
- Open internationally. No institutional affiliation required, and independent researchers working outside institutions are explicitly welcome.
- Out of scope: projects that use AI purely as a production tool without machine-to-machine dynamics as the subject matter.
