About

A small garden built on unused city land where classes come to learn science by doing it instead of reading about it, planting seeds to learn biology, testing soil to learn chemistry, tracking weather to learn climate.

Impact

Many underfunded schools have cut science labs and field trips entirely, leaving kids to learn biology and ecology only from diagrams in a book. FieldNotes converts vacant, often neglected city lots into living classrooms.

Progress

Secured a lot-use agreement with the city for one pilot site. Built 8 raised garden beds with volunteer labor and partnered with two elementary schools for a spring semester pilot serving 120 students.

Team

I taught 5th grade science for 6 years in a school with no lab space and watched kids light up the one time a year we did an outdoor unit. I now have a background in urban planning and a working relationship with the city's vacant-lot program.

Funding

No displayed figures preserved for this project.

Season totals as displayed on the platform's public accounting — not a statement of amounts paid out. V2 = Venus sales + Venus extras. The original page also broke each season down by fund drive and showed an Available (unclaimed) balance; that level of detail survives only on the preserved snapshots.
