Funding biology's outsiders: independent scientists doing creative, community-driven research in labs the institutions forgot to build.
Modern science has no third spaces. You can consume it or you can professionalize it, but there is almost nowhere left to simply play. The Biopunk Fund backs the independent scientists building those spaces: a worldwide network of community labs anchored by one of San Francisco's largest, the Primordia microgrant program already funding teams in six countries, hackathons where you don't pay to play, and fellowships for longer arcs of inquiry. We believe breakthrough science starts as play, not as a grant proposal. Our community has already sparked menstrual stem cell research, robotic lab automation, and living wall panels that absorb carbon. If you're doing real science outside the institutions, in public, with your community, this fund is your first check.

We welcome garage biologists, community lab members, hackathon teams, and first-time researchers. You do not need a PhD, an institution, or a startup; you need a question and the drive to chase it in public.
To qualify for this fund, projects must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Independent Science: Led by independent scientists or small teams working outside traditional academic and corporate structures (affiliations are fine; institutional dependence is not).
- Community-Rooted: The work is practiced inside a community environment, such as a community lab, hackathon, or shared research group.
- Creative Science: We prize playful experiments and contrarian ideas that challenge what everyone assumes is true; the wilder the question, the stronger your reason should be.
- Practice in Public: Share your process as you build, including methods, materials, and null results, not just the polished wins.
- Wider Benefit: The project should benefit many people, with extra love for climate and environmental impact, DNA literacy, and open access to the tools of biotechnology.
- No VC-Backed Startups: Incorporated startups already raising from venture capital, accelerators, or incubators are not eligible; public-good money stays in public hands.
- Early-Stage Welcome: A first experiment is enough; you do not need preliminary data, half a million dollars, or anyone's permission.
