Funding straw, hemp, earth, and timber building, and the teaching that lets communities own the skill.
Buildings should come from the land and return to it, and the knowledge of how to make them should belong to the people who live in them. This fund supports builders, architects, material scientists, and educators developing regenerative, bio-based, low-toxicity building materials and methods, straw, hemp, earth, timber, reclaimed and renewable materials, with an emphasis on convivial tools: techniques simple and transparent enough that a community can learn, repair, and adapt them on their own terms, free from permanent dependence on outside suppliers and experts.
To qualify for this fund, projects must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Projects must center regenerative, reclaimed, or bio-based materials such as straw, hemp, earth, and timber over conventional high-embodied-carbon ones.
- Include a real educational component: workshops, apprenticeships, open documentation, or a school or course structure, so funding a project also funds the spread of the skill.
- Show a credible path to replication: something a community elsewhere could learn and adapt.
- Favor convivial tools: techniques simple and transparent enough that a community can learn, repair, and adapt them on their own terms, rather than proprietary systems that create permanent dependence on outside experts.
- Open to builders, architects, material scientists, and educators developing low-toxicity materials and methods.
