A fund for Contact Improvisation projects advancing accessibility, decolonial practice, and community.
The Contact Improvisation Fund for Radical Movers supports artists, organizers, facilitators, researchers, collectives, and community practitioners using Contact Improvisation as a practice of social transformation rather than simply a dance form. We fund projects that expand access, strengthen locally rooted communities, cultivate collective care, and explore how embodied practice can respond to questions of justice, ecology, migration, disability, gender, and power. Some of the most important work in Contact Improvisation is happening far from the best-known festivals: in grassroots communities from La Havana to Goa to Busan, where movement and radical playfulness become ways of reimagining how people live together on this shared planet. Yet these initiatives are often underfunded and overlooked. This fund seeks to redistribute not only financial resources, but also visibility, trust, and recognition toward the people building resilient, community-rooted practices. The fund is led by fran and Fer, two long-standing community organisers deeply embedded in international Contact Improvisation networks across Europe, Asia and Abya Yala. Together, they work as connectors between communities, helping circulate knowledge, relationships, and resources horizontally while supporting practices that remain accountable to their own local territories. The fund aims to strengthen this global ecology by investing in the people already imagining more accessible, decolonial, and socially engaged futures for Contact Improvisation.
Projects must use Contact Improvisation or embodied movement as a central methodology and demonstrate a clear social, cultural, ecological, or educational impact beyond artistic production alone.
Projects in this fund are expected to engage seriously with the social and political dimensions of embodiment: how power moves through bodies, how touch can be practiced responsibly rather than as entitlement, and how improvisation can become a tool for rehearsing different forms of coexistence. This includes attention to who is able to participate, under what conditions, and with what material and structural support.
Projects should:
- Promote accessibility and actively reduce financial, social, or cultural barriers to participation;
- Demonstrate ethical practices around consent, accountability, inclusion, and collective care;
- Contribute to local communities through coherent and intentionally decolonizing ways of sharing, building collective research, learning processes and knowledge building ,, performance, public intervention, or community organizing;
- Avoid extractive or purely commercial approaches, showing reciprocal relationships with the people and places involved;
- Operate with financial transparency and articulate how resources will directly support artists, participants, ecosystems and community impact.
Priority will be given to projects that challenge dominant narratives within Contact Improvisation, strengthen locally rooted practices, and imagine more equitable, diverse, and socially engaged futures for the field.
