Commons Hub Fund for Village Builders

Seeking creators building events, media, open-source tools, and shared infrastructure that turn local experiments into lasting commons.

At an 1860s inn turned living lab in the Austrian Alps, Commons Hub Austria gathers artists, hackers, and tinkerers exploring how culture, governance, production, and community life can be held in common. We believe a commons grows one project at a time: when creators share what they build, every project becomes a foundation for the next. This fund seeds projects that draw on the Hub's spaces, fablab, gardens, and event infrastructure, from residencies, unconferences, and documentaries to open-source software, fabrication designs, and educational resources, and that leave behind outputs others can learn from, adapt, and reuse. Our goal is a lightweight engine for the ecosystem around the Hub: early-stage projects gain traction here, and local experiments grow into something lasting, shared with the world.

Eligibility

We welcome projects of every kind, from gatherings, residencies, publications, and media to open-source software, fabrication tools, research, and shared village infrastructure. What unites them is simple: each project strengthens the Hub's ecosystem and leaves something behind that others can build on.
To qualify for this fund, projects must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Strengthen the Hub. Projects must contribute directly to the Commons Hub Austria ecosystem through its spaces, community, programs, or long-term mission.
- Release a Commons. At least part of each project's output must be made openly available, such as documentation, code, designs, educational material, media, reusable formats, or shared infrastructure.
- Present a Clear Plan. Applications should outline the project's scope, rough timeline, expected costs, and intended outputs.
- Use the Shared Infrastructure. Projects should make real use of the Hub's spaces, fablab, gardens, event infrastructure, or community network.
- Fundraise on Artizen. Projects must actively raise funds through Artifact sales and engage their community throughout the campaign.
- Sustain the Fund. Creators help keep the fund alive through regular contributions of cash, boosts, outreach, or equivalent support.
- Above all, build the village. Every project should help turn local experiments into reusable commons that outlast the project itself, growing the village that holds them.
