About
During the pilot phase of arts organization 221A’s Node Library, we’re building a distributed storage system for the archiving of digital cultural assets, combining a local-first provision of services, with decentralized storage technologies.
Impact
Our secure, open source, context-preserving storage solution will demonstrate that distributed tech can enhance data sovereignty and create revenue for stewards of digital culture in galleries, libraries, archives, museums and special collections.
Progress
Hackathon, gathered project team, completed a literature review, consultations and comprehensive survey targeting international institutions. And, received initial funding from Canada Council for the Arts, and other academic and government bodies.
Team
Our team of cultural, academic and tech professionals includes staff of 221A, a cultural R&D nonprofit active in web3 since 2018; University of British Columbia’s iSchool; Blockchain@UBC; and Hypha, a developer co-op for decentralized web projects.

Season totals as displayed on the platform's public accounting — not a statement of amounts paid out. V2 = Venus sales + Venus extras. The original page also broke each season down by fund drive and showed an Available (unclaimed) balance; that level of detail survives only on the preserved snapshots.
