Kuzana Experiments Fund

Backing radically better ways to build wealth in Kenya & Kuzana ecosystem

Africa has plenty of capital for ideas that already fit into a box: the venture-backed startup, the NGO project, the research grant, the government program. This fund is interested in what happens before the box exists. A community of floating homes that rearrange themselves on Kilifi Creek. A wellbeing platform that folds movement, book clubs, and discussion groups into the working week. A public rating system that lets entrepreneurs see how funders actually behave. A community-owned business, a new way to finance small firms, a governance experiment that sounds slightly crazy until somebody tries it. Kuzana is a made-up word that sounds, in Swahili, like helping each other grow, and that is the method here: small, concrete tests run by builders in Kenya who are close enough to meet, sharpen each other, and share what worked and what failed. Some experiments will fail. Good. The goal is not to predict the future correctly; it is to make enough intelligent attempts that we discover the pieces of the future worth scaling.

Eligibility

We welcome entrepreneurs, engineers, architects, researchers, artists, and community organizers building in Kenya.
To qualify for this fund, projects must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Rooted in Kenya: Led by Africans and based in Kenya, or close enough that the curators can meet you in person. Kenya first; the map may widen later.
- Before the Box: The work does not fit a venture round, an NGO grant, or a research budget. If conventional capital already fits your idea, go take it.
- A Genuinely Different Way: Tests a new way of living, building, trading, organizing, or governing, rather than trying to beat the existing system at its own game.
- Small Money, Real Leverage: Attacks the problem in a way where a modest amount of capital changes the outcome.
- Something Real: Produces a prototype, pilot, tool, space, community, or experiment that can be tested within 12 months.
- Traction and a Path: The founders have already taken the project as far as they can on their own, and there is a logical route from this test to success.
- Grounded and Practical: A tangible thing that can be built and measured. Bold is welcome; vague is not.
- Share the Results: Commit to publishing what worked and what failed so the next builder starts further ahead.
We favor bold experiments over conventional businesses, academic research, or advocacy. The question every project should answer: What if we tried it?
