About
Herman "the Disabled” was an astonishing 11th century musician, probably suffering from cerebral palsy and confined to a chair for his entire life. We would like to create new editions and record his complete musical output, which is truly amazing.
Impact
This project will bring the work of this amazing disabled medieval figure back into music history, with long-reaching implications for understanding medieval music and the role of disabled people in it.
Progress
Of the major works by Herman, we have prepared a new edition (from medieval manuscripts) of his Historia Sancti Magni and performed it several times, in NYC and Germany. There are several more Historia that need editing and modern premieres.
Team
My collaborator and I have spent years studying medieval music, working with manuscripts, and performing music from the 9th-16th centuries, including teaching the topic at Juilliard and touring with world class ensembles such as Sequentia.
